General English

General English is for people who can already say a few things in English and want them to turn into speech. 168 teaching lessons, each one written by hand to its own plan: a form to notice, a task you solve twice, an exercise on the board and a sound to aim at, plus 48 checkpoint conversations that add nothing new and let you hear what stuck. The levels are the CEFR ones, and a level is covered by its parts together: the things a speaker there can actually do.

• One subscription covers the whole programme. When you finish a part, the next one opens on its own.
• A1 is outside the programme, which runs from A2 to B2. If your first lesson puts you there, we say so instead of selling you a plan.
• General English · B2 · Part 6 is the last part so far. C1 and C2 are being written, and we will say so here when they are open.

Your first lesson is free

It is an assessment, and it takes about 15 minutes. You talk, the tutor listens, and at the end you have your level and the part of the programme you start from.

• No card, nothing to cancel afterwards.
• It is also where you meet the teacher: the voice, the pace, the way it corrects you. Better to hear that before you pay than after.
• Nothing is graded in the school sense. The result is a starting point, and you can change the part you study later.

How a lesson goes

A General English lesson is 20 minutes with a shape, not an open-ended chat. You speak for most of it.

   Last lesson's language, brought back by using it rather than re-explaining it.

2. 3–6

   New form

   Today's form, shown through examples and said out loud until it sits.

3. 6–11

   Practice

   Items on the board you finish yourself, with the tutor only nudging.

4. 11–16

   A situation you actually need, played out in roles.

5. 16–18

   Fix-ups

   The mistakes that came up today, one round each.

6. 18–20

   Wrap-up

   What moved today, and the one thing to practise before next time.

Why it works this way

None of this is our invention. Task repetition, retrieval practice and spaced review are what research on learning a second language keeps finding; below is where each one shows up in your lesson.

• The same task, twice

  Lessons come in pairs. The first introduces the language and gives you a short run at a real task; the second puts you through that same task again with more of the language. Saying it the second time is where grammar turns into speech.

• Material comes back on a schedule

  What you learn returns at the end of the lesson, at the start of the next one, again a few lessons later, and at a checkpoint. The schedule is written into the programme position by position, so nothing depends on remembering to revise.

• Mistakes wait for the end of your thought

  A mistake that blocks understanding is fixed on the spot. The rest waits until you finish speaking, and the ones you keep making come back inside later exercises until they stop.

• A board you work on

  The form of the lesson goes up on the board, then an exercise does, and you finish it yourself while the tutor nudges. At the end one card names what moved today.

• Pronunciation on the lesson you are in

  Drills run on the phrases of today's lesson, not on a separate course. Every attempt is scored sound by sound, so you can see which one let you down.

• Checkpoints with no prompting

  Twice in each half of a part, a lesson only asks you to use what you already have. The tutor stops helping, and what you produce unprompted is what counts as learned.

Every lesson also ends with a written report you can keep: what you practised, what improved, and what to work on next.

Prices include VAT. Every plan covers the whole programme, all 12 parts. Ran out mid-month? An extra lesson is €18. Unused lessons do not roll over. About your voice

Lessons mean processing speech, so here it is plainly: we do not keep a recording of the whole lesson. Only short fragments of pronunciation exercises are stored, because they have to be scored and played back to you. Everything we keep is stored in the EU, and you can have it deleted.
